Are RV Toilet Chemicals Necessary?

One of the best things about traveling in an RV is that you get to bring your own bathroom with you, but there are downsides that go with the convenience. Namely you have to deal with cleanng the tanks and possibly related odors. Why Specialized RV toilet chemicals are recommended?

Odor control: Chemicals contain ingredients that help neutralize odors, keeping your RV smelling fresh.

Waste breakdown: They help break down waste and toilet paper, preventing clogs and buildup in the tank.

System maintenance: They prevent the formation of sludge and keep the tank and plumbing in good condition. What about if I am trying to cut down on my use of chemicals?

There is a solution for you. Water! Lots and lots of water. I know people are in the habit of conserving a precious resource, but this is not the place to skimp. When you flush, hold the pedal down for at least 10 seconds at each event and twice plus that amount if you are sitting down. Don’t be shy. A 15 second flush will only add about 1 gallon to the tank, and most black tanks hold at least 12 gallons, with some as large as 30+ gallons! The most important part of the water method is to dump your tanks daily and give them a really good rinsing while you are at it. The system works!

Maintaining your black tank is a choice: a little extra water/effort or buying/adding chemicals. Take your pick and use what works best for your situation.
