What is the 10/5 rule on propane cylinders?

Portable propane cylinders, like the 20 and 30 lb ones on the front of travel trailers or connected to your grill are known as DOT cylinders, or Department of Transportation cylinders – because they are meant to be transported and carried around.

Horizontally mounted propane tanks, often found on motorhomes, are permanently affixed to the vehicle. As such, they are considered tanks and not subject to DOT cylinder regulations.

Because propane is highly flammable and stored at a high pressure, the Department of Transportation requires all portable propane cylinders to be recertified periodically to make sure they are safe.

Propane cylinders are good for 10 years from the date of manufacture. After that, cylinders typically need inspecting and recertification every 5 years. To check your cylinders' status, look at the collar at the top. You’ll find the date of manufacture stamped into the collar using the typical month and year code. A tank stamped 08 22, for example, was manufactured in August 2022.

If you try to refill a cylinder that is due for recertification, you will be turned away until that cylinder is recertified. Most dedicated propane suppliers can perform this service. While U-Haul and Tractor Supply can fill your cylinders, they cannot recertify them.

Lastly, many web sites and individuals will cite12 years as being the time interval on inspection for DOT cylinders. This is incorrect, for it has recently been changed to 10 years. So check the dates on your cylinders BEFORE your next trip so if you do run out of propane, you can get an easy refill.
